Columbus ATDD Developers Group – Redefining the Purpose of Software Testing

In our July-August meting, Joseph Ours will be speaking on the topic of Redefining the Purpose of Software Testing.

Throughout the history of software testing, the profession has evolved from expectations of just meeting requirements to ensuring fitness of use. Along the way, testers have been saddled with the burdensome expectations of ensuring overall quality in each of these ways. They get stuck in situations where there is not enough time or resources to fully evaluate a product. In addition, with the increased use of agile methodologies, testers are finding their turnaround time is shrinking. In this presentation we will talk about the common challenges our stakeholders have in understanding our craft, as well as some of the common negative perceptions of value. We will see how this is driven by our typical approach to testing, in a methodology agnostic way, and work to identify common challenges that impact our daily lives. We will discuss how our history has driven what most believe is our purpose. We will redefine our purpose with advice on how to implement a new mindset. We will discuss embracing our newly defined purpose of software testing, where the emphasis is placed on providing information, not just raw data, to stakeholders. This will enable us to provide information instead of data and will transform testing into a service minded group whose value is transparent and ultimately empowered by their stakeholders instead of just tolerated by them.

During this session, participants will learn:
• Common challenges facing software testers today
• A better defined testing role that aligns with business value
• Things to stop doing and things to start doing to deliver value to stakeholders
